The circulation in the broadcast studio was CIRCULAR. The records were circular. The turntable platter was circular. Today on the VINYL SHELF we are worshipping 45s, LPs and other round things in general...

Lots of young girls have come FROM the Canyon, which isn't round but the hills can be twisty. The GTOs, who were girls together outrageously, were probably at Frank's house...The BYRDS weren't girls but had lots of young girls GOING to the Canyon to search for them because those guys always knew 'what's happening'...David Crosby and his cape ruled the world!!
John Mayall went to the Canyon (pictured above) all the way from the UK and all he got was a ticket for attempted arson. Not really, but he later went Walking On Sunset after having the Blues from Laurel Canyon (also at Frank's house) and was arrested for wearing only a vest and no trousers (pictured above). That's not true either but he did once live in a tree! This week you'll hear John and his Bluesbreakers featuring a young Mick Taylor...

And to get away from the L.A. madness, STARZ sings about Detroit Girls, The BEATLES (from Liverpool) sing a Memphis song, RUSH represents Canada and U2 are from Ireland and are, to be honest, not so round. In fact, their guitarist is called The Edge.

From the UK we hear CITY BOY & LONG JOHN BALDRY, who's not so much ROUND as he is LONG. And PHILIPPE WYNNE was in THE SPINNERS and I would assume in order to spin, one would have to be ROUND, or at least oval.
...the musical journey will surprise you with little gems and then make a full circle (which is ROUND) back to Los Angeles by opening THE DOORS for a song about the Earth (you guessed it, ROUND).

Don Cornelius!? NO WAY!!?!!?!!!
Ironically, I pre-recorded this VINYL SHELF episode last week and I had already featured a rare Don Cornelius spoken word groove from the "Soul Train '75" album called 'Spectrum.' He is my main inspiration as a "DJ" and I cannot even truly call myself one when mentioned next to the man's great name. I ripoff a lot of his catch phrases to introduce tunes. Now, if I only had THE VOICE!! Don introduced me to TONS of songs that I love every week right in my living room. A few years ago they were showing reruns of "Soul Train" every weekend and I literally have hundreds of episodes recorded on DVD discs. Anyway, Don, this episode's for you. L.O.V.E. you.

AL WILSON--Radio Show Interview LPs

It's 'show and tell' time and today I'm sharing these rare transcription radio discs as a tribute to the late, great AL WILSON, an American soul singer who is both overlooked and underappreciated (not to mention unrelated). "Show And Tell" was a #1 soul smash that still sounds awesome on the radio today. Hear the story of AL WILSON via radio show interviews including "Sounds Like The Navy" with Sam Riddle from May 1974 and the Army reserve program "Rap N' Rhythm" with host Al Gee at the peak of his "Show And Tell" success.

Listen to Wilson's sweet but husky soul voice showing its heavy side on a hard hitting cover version of CCR's "Born On The Bayou" (and an earlier cover of "Lodi" shows Wilson's Fogerty further fondness). Another one of Al's singles from 1974 is a Carpenters medley!

"Touch And Go" is an obvious re-write of his #1 but dang, it's a really good place to revisit.

BAY CITY ROLLERS Manana 45 1972

Next time you're at a happening party and someone asks you the inevitable party conversation starter question, "Les or Duncan?", you should calmly respond with "actually, I prefer the five singles with Nobby Clark singing."
Now, I've never seen Nobby Clark's name on anybody's FAVORITE Roller list and hearing the original voice and sound of the band's early pre-plaid era Bell singles (most were never released in the U.S.) can be quite a shock for anyone expecting to have their shang a-lang'd.
NOBBY CLARK is actually a fine pop singer with a tone not unlike Bobby Sherman but technically Clark's a better vocalist than Sherman. I mean that in the best way, Bobby and Nobby. It's definitely a 'pop' voice and what you really miss on the early Roller singles is the GUITAR! The sound is lightweight and makes "Give A Little Love" seem like Sabbath. It's even questionable who played on these records but so what!?!?!!
The band's debut 45 in 1971 was a top 10 hit in the UK, a punchy remake of the Gentrys' "Keep On Dancing" (which the band re-recorded in 1975 on their "Once Upon A Star" album with Leslie singing). The second Bell 45, a flop cover version of Tommy Roe's "We Can Make Music," is the hardest to find and was never released in the U.S. at all.

By the time the Rollers third single "Manana" was released in mid-1972, the personnel was solidified with ALAN and DEREK LONGMUIR, ERIC FAULKNER, JOHN DEVINE and NOBBY. The song was a hit throughout Europe and was released as a single in many countries with different picture sleeves. When I visited Spain a few years ago, a record shop there was playing a Spanish cover version of "Manana"! Written and produced by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley, the Rollers version won the 4th Radio Luxemburg Grand Prix International at the Nouveau Theatre in Luxemburg and went to the top 10 in Germany. It's a pretty odd sounding single!

The b-side is a Nobby Clark original called "Because I Love You." Nobby usually had the b-side on these early singles. The "Manana" single was only released in the U.S. as a promotional copy on the Bell label with the STEREO version on one side and the MONO version on the other side.

CLINT HOLMES Radio Interview LP January 1975

"My name is Michael, I got a nickel, I got a nickel, shiny and new.
I'm gonna buy me all kinds of candy, that's what I'm gonna do"
Man, what memories those words and that melody conjur up! How can you NOT recall that melody and song especially if you were a youngster at the time? Even if you forced your mind to try and forget it!? It's kinda creepy and scary and uncomfortable. The proverbial playground in MY mind would be working overtime trying to forget that I ever even HEARD this song. And I never even owned a copy of the record. But wait a minute...is it really that bad?

Years later, when this song re-surfaced in the jukebox in my mind (via a 70's compilation), I realized it wasn't a children's record at all and the production was pretty solid and who was this guy singing? He has a pretty good voice!

All questions are answered with this rare radio transcription LP is called "Sounds Like The Navy" featuring host Sam Riddle interviewing the singer, Clint Holmes, in the early years of his successful musical career. OK, I admit I kinda like 'Playground' now.

the kids from: C.A.P.E.R.

C.A.P.E.R. = CIVILIAN AUTHORITY FOR THE PROTECTION OF EVERYBODY, REGARDLESS

"the kids from: C.A.P.E.R." was a popular Saturday morning children's television series in 1976 and 1977. If you grew up with it, you get it. If not, you probably won't. Kind of a 70's version of the Monkees (Don Kirshner is Executive Producer and the LP is on Kirshner Records) but (l-r) P.T. (Steve Bonino), Bugs (Cosie Costa), Doc (John Lansing) and Doomsday (Biff Warren) were mainly crimefighters who sang good pop songs on the side (arranged by Paul Shaffer and written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, Ron Dante and members of The Tokens among others). The Kids only 'sang' the songs featured on each episode and were never seen holding or playing instruments.
There are some good websites and you tube clips out there so check out the zany quartet especially to hear the BEST song from the show that's left off of the album...the Theme From The Kids From C.A.P.E.R.!

The four Kids also got some pretty good coverage in the teen mags during their quick 14 minutes.

A 1957 Decca Records LP collection by the very man himself, Burl Ives, singing yuletide folk songs for your Christmas listening pleasure. Many of these tracks were originally released as a 10" long player entitled "Christmas Day In The Morning" but this 12" version contains four additional tracks including popular favorites like the opener "Silent Night," "Twelve Days Of Christmas" and "It Came Upon The Midnight Clear."
These early recordings are not as popular or as easily found as Burl's 1965 Decca album "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas" but they're just as essential for December vinyl spinning.

FRIENDS A&M Promo Sampler 1970

Awesome sampler LP from A&M Records released in 1970 and was aimed at rock radio stations with HUMBLE PIE, FREE, SPOOKY TOOTH (covering ELTON), LEE MICHAELS, FAIRPORT CONVENTION, FOTHERINGAY and even THE MOVE (here with a rare 'abridged' version of "Hello Susie"...check out the end fade!).

The album was 'programmed' by JOHN MENDELSOHN who also plays 'the chicken' on the front cover!! YES, the same John Mendelsohn we were just talking about from CHRISTOPHER MILK.

Also cool here is the ORIGINAL "It Ain't Easy" by singer/songwriter RON DAVIES which was later covered by both BOWIE and THREE DOG NIGHT.

CAT STEVENS sings "Trouble," BLODWYN PIG plods along and even odd man out QUINCY JONES shows up with a suped-up instrumental version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water." There's also a version of "Mr. Bojangles" by LAMBERT & NUTTYCOMBE.

OLIVER! Rare UK LP w/ young STEVE MARRIOTT

This is Steve Marriott's first appearance on vinyl. On a recent episode of The Vinyl Shelf, I spun a rare pre-Small Face Marriott with his band The Moments and their version of "You Really Got Me" with Steve's lead vocal. This LP pre-dates that single by a few years and features young "Stephen Marriott" as The Artful Dodger in the original cast of Lionel Bart's "Oliver" released in the UK on the World Record Club label in the early 1960's.

On his vinyl debut, little Stephen's voice already has star quality and he even has a few lead vocals on songs throughout the album. His voice is also easily picked out in the group choruses. Steve is featured on "Consider Yourself," "Be Back Soon" and "I'd Do Anything" in glorious British mono.

By 1963 he was cast in the Peter Sellers film "Heavens Above!" and followed that with a few more youthful rock & roll movies until he met Ronnie Lane and became a full-time musician.

KAPTAIN KOOL & THE KONGS 2 different LPs by KROFFT SUPERSHOW Klassics

I guess by now you're probably not surprised to find out that I own these LPs but hey, of course I'm a Sid & Marty Krofft-head and I totally remember Kaptain Kool and his band of Kongs being EVERYWHERE on TV when I was a kid. Did you know that on the first season of the Krofft Supershow (which The Kongs hosted before the Bay City Rollers took over in 1978) the band had a heavier 'glam' sound and also an extra member, Bert Sommer (aka Flatbush), who was already an established hitmaker having been a member of the Left Banke, appeared at Woodstock and in the original Broadway version of "Hair." He even had a few solo albums with some chart success. But for the second season, the network toned the band's image down, Sommer was gone and the band's Epic album was released and full of pop disco. They remained a four piece but before long Kaptain Kool was unanimously voted "not Kool" and they were taken off the TV show.

Kaptain Kool (Michael Lembeck) soon had a beard and guest starred on "One Day At A Time" as Mackenzie's husband. Turkey (Mickey McMeel) was actually in Three Dog Night for a spell as their drummer. Superchick disappeared altogether but Nashville (Louise DuArt) was re-hired by the Kroffts, playing many characters on the Bay City Rollers show.So, Kaptain Kool & The Kongs mean a bit more to me than just being handsomely filed in my LP collection between Judas Priest and Katrina & The Waves. Thanks to thrift stores and record shop bargain bins I own the Kongs two LP discography.

The Epic Records album is SONGS and not as bad as you think. Some are more disco'd out than others but there are a few ballads and Spector/girl group songs (never of that quality though). Bert Sommer co-wrote one song.

The Peter Pan album is STORIES featuring clips from the Krofft Supershow live action shows "Magic Mongo," "Bigfoot And Wildboy" and "Wonderbug" with SHORT comedy skit intros featuring the Kongs themselves.Unfortunately, their were NO record releases of the band's earlier material and Bert Sommer died in 1990.

RCA DISCO Sampler LPs

Due to the heavy action and response on my past DISCO posts, here are two weird and random DISCO sampler LPs that were both issued by RCA in 1979.

"DISCO DAZZLE" is a STRI-DEX ("Come Over To My PAD for Disco Dazzle" is the tagline on the back cover) promotional album put out by RCA Special Products. It features seven long NON-STOP disco classics by big dancefloor names and RCA artists like the late VICKI SUE ROBINSON ("Turn The Beat Around"), the inventive sound of DR. BUZZARD'S ORIGINAL SAVANNAH BAND and that tight Philly instrumental sound by SALSOUL ORCHESTRA.

ODYSSEY is here with their classic "Native New Yorker" and EVELYN "CHAMPAGNE" KING ("Smooth Talk") shows off her great vocal power. Early SHALAMAR delivers an exciting "Take That To The Bank" and an upbeat soulful MAJOR HARRIS track, "I Wanna Dance With You" rounds out this DAZZLING platter.
"DISCO AROUND THE GLOBE" is released by RCA Global Communications and features one side of U.S. disco hitmakers and the B-side travels the world to find the best international sounds. This LP is NOT mixed non-stop so I put track numbers on the individual songs.

For the American side, a reappearing EVELYN "CHAMPAGNE" KING is represented by her megahit "Shame" and Motown legend EDWIN STARR has an updated sound with "Contact." Successful songwriting duo GREY & HANKS had a giant groove with "Dancin'" and east coast band INSTANT FUNK couldn't have had a bigger classic than their #1 smash "I Got My Mind Made Up (Say Whaat)." Soooo funky. If you want my money, you gotta make it good as honey.

On the International side, the famous Brazilian dance combo BANDA BLACK RIO kicks up "Dance Do Dia" with great synths and clavinet while HIDEKI from Japan unleashes the "Hideki Disco Special" even though they spell his name wrong on the cover. Hideki is possibly the LP's highlight! He incorporates snippets of other disco hits in his tune to bring the vibe way up. RITA & L'ANONIMA RAGAZZI represent Italy with "Presto" and a disco cover of Serge Gainsbourg's "Que Est In Que Est Out" is by France's LAURENT VOULZY.

BOB SEGER Back In '72

I bought this on the road for some DOUGH but I've been lusting a copy of this great lost LP for a long time and wasn't happy with my high class "cleaned up" download from a few years ago. I appreciate people recording their vinyl and trying to de-click etc. but I hate when the result sounds compromised, blurry and phase-y, which is why I try to stick with STRAIGHT transfers. You know The Pipe don't mind a little surface noise.

Seger doesn't want this album on CD. Released on Palladium/Reprise in 1973, it may not be one of Bob's five star best, but just for the fact that this album contains the ORIGINAL versions of both "Rosalie" (as Phil said, "It's a number recorded by Bob Seger...") and "Turn The Page" (think about it-when have you EVER heard the STUDIO version?) is plenty of reason that this should be on the market.The album starts with a strange and re-arranged version of the Allmans' "Midnight Rider" complete with a questionable vocal note at the end covered up by a quick thinking scat. I haven't heard the version on the recent "Early Seger Vol. 1" but I understand it's remixed and fades before the weak spot. "So I Wrote You A Song" reminds me of something from the "Brand New Morning" album. Another cover follows as Seger tackles Free's "The Stealer" and gives it the Detroit treatment. On this one, Bob's voice shines.

Seger's always looking back and funnily enough in early 1973 he was already looking back to the previous year. "Back In '72" is a Stones-ish rocker that should be on the radio, not out of print for no one to hear. "Neon Sky" is based on an electric piano riff and it stands out as a highlight of the album too. "I've Been Working" is a funky Van Morrison cover and "I've Got Time" is a folky ballad with flute.

Produced by Seger and longtime manager Punch, the sessions were done in Michigan, Oklahoma and Muscle Shoals in Alabama. Don't be embarrassed by this album Bob, we love it!

STARDUST 1975 Arista Soundtrack 2LP

This 1975 soundtrack for "STARDUST" is an Arista 2LP collection that could easily be one of the ultimate oldies compilations ever released. UK superstar David Essex starred in this UK film about a fictional singer, Jim Maclaine, and his musical rise and fall.

The soundtrack is made up of 40 songs. There are 3 sides of classic oldies, mostly in their original versions. A big mix of sounds from The Beach Boys, Bobby Darin, The Chiffons, Bee Gees, The Monkees, Aretha Franklin, Righteous Brothers, Carole King, The Box Tops and many more. A GREATEST HITS OF GREATEST HITS!

Arista's publishing bill must've been huge! 40 songs with lots of different label and publishers involved. The front cover is made to resemble Rolling Stone magazine, totally different artwork than the UK soundtrack LP.

Dave Edmunds appears in the movie and was also heavily involved with the soundtrack. He supplies a few near perfect remakes ("Da Doo Ron Ron" with Nick Lowe and Brinsley Schwarz and also a couple Everly Brothers cover versions) and on side 4 Edmunds produces 'oldies sounding' tracks with and without David Essex as THE STRAY CATS (ironically, Dave would produce a different group of Stray Cats, with Brian Setzer, just a few years later).

The movie, starring Essex, Adam Faith, Keith Moon and Larry Hagman, is now available on DVD as an import as a double feature with another Essex film "That'll Be The Day" which also has an interesting 2LP soundtrack that I will post if this one gets a good response.

If only your local oldies radio station played a mix of tunes like this album. An inspiring listening experience of pop music perfection with some exclusive Edmunds rockers.

CHRISTOPHER MILK Some People Will Download Anything

God help us all. John Mendelsohn (sometimes with 2 S's in his last name) is a great rock critic/writer who also compiled "The Kink Kronikles" double LP that is as flawless as it is essential. Not to mention, he is to thank (or blame, depending whose side you're on) for the release of "The Great Lost Kinks Album" for Reprise.

His early 70's band was called CHRISTOPHER MILK (above photo L to R: The Kiddo, Ralph Oswald, Mendelsohn and G. Whiz) and they are an obscure Los Angeles glam rock afterthought. Along with guitarist 'Surly' Ralph Oswald, Mendelsohn had briefly been a member in an early, unrecorded version of Halfnelson with Ron and Russell Mael (later Sparks). Russell told me that although Mendelsohn was also an anglophile (into British style and bands like The Kinks, The Move, Small Faces and The Who), he was also critical of the Mael's songwriting and even wanted the band to do a straight cover of "A Quick One."

The MILK poured ahead and by 1971, a self-titled long-playing 7" EP on the United Artists label was available via mail order for just $1 from Phonograph & Record magazine and it is weird and wonderful. This 15 plus minute debut release had an extended version of the lineup with The Kiddo and Mr. Twister. Even David Bowie namechecked them in the British press.!Their only LP was titled "Some People Will Drink Anything" on Reprise in 1972. It featured a now streamlined 'quartet' version of the band. The songs are more lyrical than hook-y (like early Split Enz), and sometimes hard to remember after you heard them numerous times. The band's audience was also streamlined and very often outsmarted. Great guitar work though and quirky humorous songs (a pre-Grand Funk "Locomotion" cover in a Bonzo vein) with lyrics worthy enough to make sure you seek out the original lyric sheet. Crisp production by Beatles engineer Chris Thomas ultimately could not help them find their audience.

A final Reprise single in 1973, despite its two-fisted, double-sided strength (and again, humor), flopped. I love their take on "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and always wonder if Cheap Trick heard this version of Terry Reid's "Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace" before they cut their own for their 1977 debut. No other recordings were to follow although they did get back together at the Starwood in 1976 because Rodney wanted them to.

Anyway, no use crying over the musical spillage left behind by Christopher Milk. ENJOY!

On Saturday afternoons when I was a kid, a local Philadelphia TV station showed repeat episodes of a syndicated UK pop music show from a few years prior called "Supersonic" which introduced me to Showaddywaddy and The Glitter Band while I could also see well known favorites like Sweet and the Rollers.

When I started seeing this album show up as a cutout in my teenage years, I recognized some of these groups from that earlier British scene. It was also where I learned that Hello had the original version of Ace Frehley's hit "New York Groove" with the arrangement copied almost exactly. Awesome cover photo of the BCR, a "Wouldn't You Like It" outtake.

Slik is here featuring a young MIDGE URE and a big Roller-esque chorus (written by "Saturday Night" writers Bill Martin & Phil Coulter) on "Forever And Ever." And the BCR themselves have two selections including the ORIGINAL 1971 version of "Keep On Dancing" with original vocalist Nobby Clark (interesting to note, thanks to this album, this early version was actually, officially released on an Arista LP in the United States). The Drifters were also staples on the "Supersonic" series and Gary Glitter's appearance here make this album a GLAM MONSTER.

RINGO STARR March 1982 Robert W. Morgan Interview LP

Drumming is his madness. He was Ringo because of his rings, and the Starr was obvious. The Beatles were a band from Liverpool, England who were wonderfully fab and could even be gear, if you dig nice trousers and smart melodies. They scored big hits like "Yellow Submarine" and "Octopus' Garden" and still maintained their street cred with songs like "What Goes On" and their beloved cover of "Matchbox." After they faltered a little in the summer of love, releasing psychedelic tinged albums influenced by The Rolling Stones and Andy Warhol, they released their double album masterpiece, "The White Album" in which they successfully (and astonishingly) eliminated any R&B influence they had. Their final LP, "Let It Be" was mostly unfinished.

But seriously folks, which is very rare, Ringo Starr may be the coolest rock star of all time. Everyone likes him (come on, yes you do) and he's never had a totally LAME period (well, he did shave his head bald once, but fortunately, a shortlived Brady perm never made any of the album covers) and he remains active.

Don't forget that he also spent lots of time with Harry Nilsson, and you know that can't be bad.

The other surviving Beatle, Paul McCartney, lives a quiet life in England. He spends his time getting married and writing ballets.

Released in 1969, this is an excellent collection of pop/soul oldies that was advertised and sold via TV on the Crystal Corporation label. I bought this LP as a cutout when I was a little kid and it provided my first introduction to "San Franciscan Nights" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion" while solidifying my fandom for psychedelic Cowsills and Vanilla Fudge. Derek's ode to Neil Diamond, "Cinnamon," keeps things uptempo as do The Turtles and Johnny Nash. "The Worst That Could Happen" by Brooklyn Bridge (written by Jimmy Webb) is a personal favorite also.Side one is full of great psychedelic 60's pop and side two is more R&B flavored with some unusual live tracks by Dionne Warwick, Smokey & The Miracles and Joe Tex.

HUMAN LEAGUE-Dare or Dare!
Just a few days ago as of this writing, R.E.M. called it quits. You may be surprised to find that I absolutely LOVE R.E.M. and remain loyal to the brilliant musical quartet from Georgia who have supplied me with HOURS of great songs and I know every lick by heart. You'd be probably just as surprised to find that at the same time I was discovering R.E.M. (I saw them open for The Police on the "Murmur" tour and was immediately obssessed), I was an avid follower of Sheffield's The Human League and their synthesized pop soul music.
The Mk2 version of Human League is my favorite. Electronic and well-crafted pop songs with the voice of Philip Oakey and not a guitar in sight. Both "Dare" and "Hysteria" are classics to me. That makes two great albums by Sheffield, England bands named "Hysteria."
I recently found a super clean and inexpensive Canada pressing of 1982's "Dare" with different cover graphics (see photo) and an energetic exclamation point added to the LP's title!

With a brand new Duran Duran haircut, David Cassidy released "Romance" in almost every country except America in 1985. It features a great single called "The Last Kiss" which has uncredited background vocals by George Michael who was a big Cassidy fan. There are a few good tunes including the title track (with Basia) and "Touched By Lightning" but most of the album has an 80's feel and a 'Live Aid' vibe.

Rarity value is high though so I thought I would post this clean Japanese vinyl.

A NIGHT AT STUDIO 54
"Disco" was a bad word in my bedroom when I was growing up. Say it and get out. My sister liked that crap. Mindless four-on-the-floor "songs" with yowzas and other stupid catch phrases that no reader of Circus Magazine would ever accept as a musical genre. Over time I seemed to have lost most of that anger and now I just try to appreciate it with a sense of humor. These days, I can't even believe I have a copy of Musique's "In The Bush" in my record collection.

This TWO LP monster was issued by Casablanca Records in 1979 and I can remember it being prominently featured in countless record shops and department stores even when you were trying not to notice it. This is DISCO'S GREATEST HITS done in 'Specially Engineered and Sequenced' SEGUED MIXES for continuous dancing. You can really feel the bottom as you move and groove and you swear you just saw Andy Warhol in the corner with either Cher or was it Meat Loaf?

'As Seen On Television' and 'executive produced' by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, each double album came with a bag of the finest white powder available in the New York underground. No not really, but you can almost taste it as soon as you put this platter on your table. Allow us, we'll show you the way.

"CONTAINS ALL NEW MATERIAL RECORDED 1977" screams the promo sticker on the plastic shrinkwrap on the Animals (from Newcastle) first reunion album with the original five--Eric Burdon, Alan Price, Chas Chandler, Hilton Valentine and John Steel, just like on "House Of The Rising Sun" before Alan claimed the songwriting royalties and all the bickering started. Chas, by this time hugely successful developing careers for both Jimi Hendrix and Slade, was not surprisingly awarded the producer chair for this fine piece of vinyl recorded at his very own Goulds Farm with help from the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio.
They're back! They're older! They're a blues band all over again! Yes, of course Eric still sounds evil, powerful and none more black, but the overall darkness of the band's original sound is cleaned up and mellowed down easy. It's definitely an R&B album (with covers by Jimmy Cliff, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and also Chandler's second crack at producing Rosco Gordon's "Just A Little Bit" as he had also produced Slade's version four years earlier) and no one here was seemingly worried about punk rock. If you think about it, this could've actually have been a logical next step for the band in 1967, had this lineup stuck together.

Some kind music fan clipped this Chas Chandler obituary from a newspaper and although it is touching, for this man to have been such a major part of THREE HUGE ROCK & ROLL ACTS (Animals, Hendrix, Slade), this small written tribute is a MAJOR UNDERSTATEMENT! RECORD STORES & VINYL SCORES The Pipe on the road 'Record Store Diary'

A new feature in which THE PIPE hits the record shops and you're there with him. Only the good shops will be spotlighted. Back on the road again and on the hunt for VINYL. Brian Blade told me about SOM RECORDS in D.C. and it ended up being right around the corner from the hotel. On the way there I saw the legend, Dick Gregory, walking down the street. SOM's entrance is downstairs from the street and not unlike Laverne and Shirley's apartment. It's cramped and the bins are packed but I scored a few choice pieces like WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM Soundtrack and a nice STONES interview rarity. Definitely worth a look.

The familiar red awning of GENERATION RECORDS in the Village on Thompson St. is a sight for sore eyes and always has a ton of quality vinyl downstairs and don't forget to check the rows of new arrivals.
GOOD RECORDS on 5th Street in NYC was probably my favorite shop that I hit on this tour. What looked like an average DJ/funk/soul shop turned into a goldmine for this rocker. Lots of high quality rock vinyl was just being put in the bins as the store turntable cranked some classic Isleys. Perfect shopping music. I scored some clean goodies like the CRAZY HORSE album, INTRODUCING SPARKS with a sticker on the shrinkwrap, LOU REED's "Rock & Roll Animal" and for a measly $40 I got a crisp, clean original stereo FREAK OUT! by The Mothers.
Highly recommended for vinyl shoppers who don't want to pay typical New York prices.

DAVE'S RECORDS in Chicago (2604 North Clark St.) is a long-standing vinyl only store that is always worth stopping in for a look. I picked up the new deluxe PAUL McCARTNEY vinyls ("McCartney" and "McCartney II") and had a nice conversation with 'Dave' or someone like him at the counter.

I love the sign on the door that says "NO CDs" and it's true. I also get sentimental when I walk by the former Tower Records location further down the street.

It was my second trip to Peoples Records in Detroit in less than a year and both times I scored some goodies and was treated with kindness by the staff without even trying to be treated at all. There was a original gatefold copy of "Buckingham Nicks" laying in a stack on the floor and it looked clean. No price sticker though. I asked the guy behind the counter how much he would want for this and he gave it the once over twice and said "I don't know, twelve bucks?" Sold. He then looked it up on eBay and said one had recently sold for $100. The LP was gripped firmly in my hands. I wasn't about to let him change his mind about the price. He looked me in the eye and said, "If I see that you sell this on eBay, I'll be heartbroken." I tried to reassure him, "No it's for me!"

A few minutes later, a couple came in to try and sell some beat up soul 45's including a few by the Temptations. The guy explained that he couldn't use any of them much to the disappointment of the couple who thought for sure they were sitting on a goldmine of vinyl. "I've got boxes of Temptations 45's back there" and "Have you ever heard of The Telltones on the Wanda label? Me neither, but that's the kind of stuff people are looking for, the more obscure 45's." The couple sighed and then the record store guy opened the cash register and gave them 2 bucks and thanked them for their time and trouble for coming to the store. Nice guy!

Now I'm not saying to take your junk down there and the guy will feel sorry for you and pay you off, but I will say they have a ton of 45's in white boxes that could take up a whole afternoon and also that the 'New Arrivals' section of LPs is a great place to start in the store. I was there with Brian and Trixie who also bought some choice titles and the employees also hipped us out to The Lollipop Shoppe. Before we left, the guy put "Ebony Eyes" by Bob Welch on the turntable and I'm not sure if he was testing my Fleetwood Mac knowledge once and for all to see if I was just in for a quick Stevie/Lindsey eBay cash-in but once again I proved my worthiness by having a Welch conversation.

Additionally, I found a cool CBS pressing of "Some Girls" mint in shrinkwrap. How many copies of "Some Girls" do I need?? I believe my other 'most bought' albums would be "Headquarters," "More Of The Monkees," "The Monkees," "Paul Revere And The Raiders Greatest Hits" and "Difford & Tilbrook."

Peoples are planning on moving next to the Magic Stick sometime in the near future and I say LONG LIVE PEOPLES AND DETROIT.

BOB SEGER Noah 1969 Capitol LP

Someone has just repro'd this rare SEGER vinyl and I bought one at Amoeba. Good album, but so strange that there's so much emphasis on System member Tom Neme because Bob Seger was having trouble writing follow-up songs to "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man." Although Neme has a Steve Marriott style and isn't half bad, I wish there was more rockin' Seger and less filler stuff like "Cat." Overall, this LP is an interesting chapter in the Bob Seger history.

From 1979, this rare radio transcription 2LP set features prime Foreigner, in their original incarnation, recorded live in concert during their "Double Vision" tour (at the end Lou yells "Philadelphia" so maybe it's a Spectrum show?). A true SUPER GROUP, listen to Lou Gramm's awesome vocals and Mick Jones' ripping guitar on favorites like "Hot Blooded," "Long, Long Way From Home," "Blue Morning, Blue Day" and the closer "Headknocker." There are also some rarely heard gems like "I Need You" and "The Damage Is Done" that really kill in their live versions. But listener BEWARE: some of the tracks being passed off as "live" are just the album versions with added audience tracks ("Love Has Taken It's Toll," "Tramontane," "Lonely Children" and "Back Where You Belong"). There are some interview segments too with Mick and Lou and even a few quick quotes from Al Greenwood. And check out the credits, this live show was mixed by original Foreigner keyboardist and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald giving it a little extra legitimacy. MONKEEMANIA 40 Timeless Hits ARISTA 2 LP 1979

I saved my allowance to get this giant double IMPORT LP featuring 40+ hits by the Monkees when it hit the Delaware record shops sometime in the early 80's (released in 1979). An official Australia release on Arista Records at a time when NOBODY was showing the TV show reruns (and still pre-VCR) and 90 percent of the Monkees music was UNAVAILABLE. All you could get in the U.S. was Arista's "Greatest Hits" album with a measly 11 songs. Glenn A. Baker put this comp together. Along with the hits and key album tracks he included various rarities and alternate versions as a treat to true Monkee fans. Each side was crammed with at least 10 songs plus surprises like interview quotes and previously unheard rarities. The sound quality ranged from very good to phase-y cassette dub sound but overall it's an enjoyable audio history of TV's fab four with lots of photos and a large discography including solo releases.This is my original double LP that I transferred to a DAT tape in the early digital recording days. I dug it out and it's a little noisy but still sounds pretty good. Over 2 hours of Micky, Davy, Peter and Mike.

93 KHJ Los Angeles "30 Boss Goldens" 2LP Compilation

There are many different compilations from the 1960's released all around the U.S. spotlighting popular radio stations in different cities (I have a few including Boston and Philadelphia). This double album features KHJ from Los Angeles, and although there are no DJs heard on the album, they are all introduced on the inside gatefold. The music, however, literally needs no introductions and it plays like a greatest hits of the sixties. A genuine FIVE STAR album featuring rocking nuggets and hard hitting soul. Fine mono sound with just enough surface noise to make it authentic.
From what I understand, this double LP was only available by phone in 1967.

I love Peter Frampton. I love the Bee Gees. Aerosmith rules and Earth, Wind & Fire are incredible. I'm a big fan of Steve Martin, Alice Cooper and George Burns is a Hollywood legend. Most of all, I'm a HUGE Beatles fan and believe they are responsible for some of the best music ever created. Now how could this movie have went SO WRONG??

I saw this movie twice when I was a kid. The first time was when it first opened and all that I knew was that I enjoyed it more than the first time I saw Star Wars. The second time was with a school friend at the 'budget' theatre and I tried to catch up on what I 'missed' the first time around.

The 'Introducing Sandy Farina' credit should be followed by a 'Farewell Sandy Farina' credit at the end of the movie. And the "all-star" singalong at the end of the film lists ex-Raiders Mark Lindsay and Keith Allison among the celebrity crowd but I have a hard time finding their faces.C'mon, the R.S.O. double soundtrack album can't be all that bad can it? George Martin produced the music and guests like Jeff Beck have to add to the quality, right? Unfortunately, the album is REALLY BAD with hints of disco and over-produced tracks with overblown ideas (the cocaine overflow must have been incredible). The Alice Cooper "Because" is a waste of time, Steve Martin is NOT funny and Frampton's voice is devoid of any soul and Manilow-esque in delivery (sorry Barry, check out "The Long & Winding Road" for Peter's cringeworthy lead vocal). The best tracks on this soundtrack (EWF and Aerosmith) are available elsewhere. Here's your chance to hear for yourself!

Radio was Stan Freberg's first love but by 1966 it was all about television and the chance to produce a comedy radio program was fading away like the stations that were once broadcasting nightly in everyone's living room. Freberg's idea was to continue the radio program via long playing records (hence "pay radio"...little did he know...) but sadly, this was the only LP he released featuring the concept.

ROBBIE ROBERTSON is the guest on this radio interview program LP scheduled for broadcast on March 21, 1988. “Classic Call” was a bit different from other listener call-in radio programs. The slogan was “where the superstars of rock call YOU!” and that's what happens. If you have a question for the guest, you could send in your name and phone number and the rock star might actually dial you number to answer your question. It's funny to hear Robbie calling up the fans and saying "Hi Patti, this is Robbie Robertson" and "what are you doing?" They play a few songs from The Band also which stirs up a little conversation about relations between Robbie and the other members which get smoothed over pretty quick. Mostly though, Robbie promotes his self-titled Geffen LP that he co-produced with Daniel Lanois. As far as I remember, I didn’t hear Daniel Lanois’ name mentioned once while listening to this! I was already a big fan of Sparks, and the Mael's backing band at the time was a Los Angeles combo called GLEAMING SPIRES featuring Leslie Bohem and David Kendrick and later, guitarist Bob Haag and keyboardist Jim Goodwin were also members of the expanded Spires lineup. These days, singer/bassist Les Bohem is a successful screenwriter (Dante's Peak, Twenty Bucks). I bought their albums and reviewed them in the fanzine. The back cover said "Write to a Spire" with an L.A. address, so I did and asked if I could get an exclusive interview. David Kendrick sent a postcard back telling me to send my questions and he'd do the interview only if I sent him a finished copy of the fanzine. David's a great drummer and I remember one of my questions was why they used a drum machine on the first album and he said it was to keep studio costs down. Because of that drum machine, this album has a real interesting sound that keeps it fresh and ahead of its time. I'm still writing about this damn band.

E.T.--Ultra Rare MCA LP Narrated by MJ!

This is an incredible audio book album. The hard to find "E.T." LP narrated by Michael and featuring one song ("Someone In The Dark") was released by MCA Records in 1982 for a short period before Michael's label (Epic) forced the album to be withdrawn. Produced by Quincy Jones, this soundtrack/narration LP was released at the same time as "Thriller." Epic was fine with the release until MCA promoted "Someone In The Dark" as a single, breaching their contract and sealing the album's fate. Copies were withdrawn immediately but it didn't stop the album from winning a Grammy ("Best Recording for Children"). If you can find one of these, make sure the poster is inside!

I stared at this magazine cover for hours. Many great British singles were released in the 80's. The bands had the right MUSICAL influences as well as the look. Do you remember the name GRAHAM DENE? He was the host of ROCK OVER LONDON, a syndicated program that hip FM stations would broadcast featuring the latest sounds from across the ocean. I used to tune in every Sunday night when I was a kid just trying to find some reason to forget that I had to go to school the next day. I'm not saying I love Spandau Ballet for anything more than what they are or that I think Limahl is an underrated genius, but sometimes when I got tired of metal guys dancing around in spandex and leather I'd tune in to the new wave guys dancing around in spandex and leather. Hey man, I read Circus AND Smash Hits.

This LP radio show is dated July 22, 1984 and most likely I heard it back in the day in my bedroom. BOX OF FROGS drummer Jim McCarty (Yardbirds) is interviewed and are spotlighted with a song called "Harder" that sounds a lot like THE STONES. Speaking of, "It's All Over Now" is this week's oldie and JEFF LYNNE's "Video" solo single is debuted. There's hits from ULTRAVOX, NIK KERSHAW, ALISON MOYET and the NAUGHTY BITS gossip department is also here. Take a guess who's at both #1 AND #2 on the Top 5 that week? There's also great commercials from MAXELL TAPE (Jerry Lee version) and the U.S. Army ("Be All That You Can Be"--GREAT JINGLE!).

THE ROLLERS Burning Rubber Soundtrack By Request!

How amazing is it that in 1981 in the U.S., the Bay City Rollers career was basically non-existent. It was almost like it didn't happen. Just a few years after mass hysteria and an NBC TV show, you couldn't find ANYTHING about them in rock magazines or even the teen rags that worshipped them a few years before. I had NO IDEA that the Rollers made a movie in 1981 and it was elusive for years. Maybe that's a good thing. Two versions of this film exist, one in English and one dubbed in German. Roller founder Alan Longmuir is the star of this racing car movie, playing the nerd who not only ends up getting the girl but he wins the race as well. Derek, Woody and new Roller vocalist Duncan Faure are in a few scenes as Alan's friends and they also perform during the party sequence. Eric Faulkner is the only Roller who's absent but he submits songs to the soundtrack. But this is no 'Hard Day's Night' or even 'Glitter' for that matter. The movie is slow, boring and poorly acted. It only takes the opening scene of Alan eating a bowl of cereal for anyone to know that this is no cinematic classic.I remember reading a small update on the Rollers in 16 Magazine in 1981 ('Remember Them?') that said they were set to release a new LP called "Ricochet" on CBS Records. The album never came out in the U.S. and I never heard another peep about it until a few years later when I tracked down a Japanese import (and the album before that, an Arista contractual obligation album called "Voxx" was only released in Japan and Germany and was IMPOSSIBLE to find for years). The sad truth is, the band was at their musical peak but no one would take them seriously. A few songs featured in the 'Burning Rubber' movie were re-recorded for the "Ricochet" album and it's interesting to hear the differences. Never released on vinyl or CD, only a very limited fan club cassette that I've had a dub of for years. I didn't try to clean up the tape hiss or anything, I just did a straight transfer. BCR still rule!

CASSIDY LIVE!

No Partridge tunes here but there's a version of "Please Please Me" and LOTS of screaming mania. Recorded in Great Britain in 1974, a time when Cassidy was the BIGGEST there was. An interesting listen even if it's filled with oldies medleys and even "Delta Lady." The only thing missing here is Danny's killer bass lines. DAVID CASSIDY Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes... BELL LP

This 1973 release by teen idol sensation David Cassidy comes off as a serious artistic statement considering any of the songs on his previous solo LPs would've easily fit on any Partridge Family album ("Cherish" and "Rock Me Baby" which are both produced by Partridge producer Wes Farrell).

A new producer, Rick Jarrard, brings a different sound to the backing tracks as David covers Nilsson, Peggy Lee, John Sebastian and even the Partridge Family's "Summer Days" is here in a completely different arrangement. A few nice originals too written with future superstar Kim Carnes, who was Cassidy's backup vocalist, and her husband Dave Ellingson. I remember the BCR championing this album in teen mags in their early days. And why not? David's got a great voice and he was definitely a rock star. He released two more solo albums on the Bell label (a live one and a greatest hits collection half full of Partridge tunes) before Clive Davis decided to clean house and D.C. moved to RCA and continued what he started with this one. Try it, you'll like it.

From 1959, this is the soundtrack of the rarely seen Otto Preminger film with Sidney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge. The film has never been officially released on DVD nor has there been a legitimate CD release for the soundtrack due to a denial of release by the Gershwin Estate (they were unhappy with Otto Preminger's film treatment). The Fabulous BRENDA HOLLOWAY RARE Every Little Bit Hurts TAMLA Mono LP

Never officially released on CD, this is a classic album by a classic artist who doesn't get enough recognition. She opened for the Beatles on their 1965 tour and released a bunch of BRILLIANT singles on the Tamla label (compiled on a stellar Motown "Greatest Hits And Rare Classics" CD that is a must buy). This album has a more adult sound, it's classy and not a normal 'aimed at the average teen' Motown release of the time. This was her only LP released on Tamla.Brenda is from Los Angeles and was Berry Gordy's first west coast signing. She has an amazing voice and was brought in as a NEW Mary Wells. She is also co-writer of the standard "You've Made Me So Very Happy" that was a hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears. Her sister (who passed away a few years ago) is Patrice Holloway, also blessed with a strong singing voice (she was the lead vocalist on the original cartoon series of "Josie & The Pussycats) and her records are also well worth hunting (if you can find 'em).
I almost had the chance to play music with Brenda Holloway and talked to her on the phone a few times but she was a busy mother and housewife and that kept her too busy for music at the time. Maybe someday! Brenda Holloway RULES.

"The Original MOTOR TOWN REVUE" UK LP

This is an 80's pressing UK Tamla Motown LP that compiles ultra rare early 60's 'Motortown Revue' live recordings. You get to hear some vintage Temptations ("Dream Come True" and "I Want A Love I Can See" featuring Paul Williams lead vocal) letting everyone know that they were ALREADY the BEST and Marvin Gaye's voice is a true natural wonder. Speaking of Wonder, a very young Stevie's here too and his one-time babysitter Martha & her Vandellas spotlight their hits. And so do the marvelous Marvelettes (Gladys Horton R.I.P.--I met her at a record convention once and she was super nice to me) who do a medley of their early smash hits. Smokey & The Miracles close the show with "Mickey's Monkey" but it's Kim Weston (especially on "Love Me All The Way") and Mary Wells (MY personal 'queen of soul') who impress me the most as singers.
